I opine about STAR WARS!

I saw a poll a while back where people ranked all the STAR WARS movies. That seemed like a good topic for a blog post, so here is my opinion on the STAR WARS movies, listed from my favorite to my least favorite:

1.) Empire Strikes Back.

2.) Return of the Jedi.

3.) A New Hope.

4.) Rogue One.

5.) Solo.

6.) Force Awakens.

7.) Return of the Sith.

8.) Phantom Menace.

9.) Attack of the Clones.

10.) The Last Jedi.

I think both ROGUE ONE and SOLO sort of got raw deals. ROGUE ONE reminded me of a Chinese wuxia film where the heroes are bound by duty or perhaps fate and walk stoically to their destinies. Not to everyone’s taste, of course, but a good example of that kind of film. SOLO was a pretty good heist movie about double-crossing con men and thieves. It just had the bad luck to come out after THE LAST JEDI.

THE LAST JEDI, alas, in my opinion ranks with the final season of GAME OF THRONES and THE SOPRANOS as an example of spectacular failure in ambitious storytelling. (Film auteurs might like to sneer at AVENGERS: ENDGAME as popular trash, but that movie was a superb example how to satisfactorily end a story.)

Finally, I think Timothy Zahn’s THRAWN books are substantially better than any of the movies. But as a writer, I have a natural prejudice in favor of books over film. šŸ™‚

  • This is my list. I was a huge fan of the Expanded Universe.
    1) A New Hope (The first in any series is usually my favorite)
    2) Empire Strikes Back (Best executed)

    3) Revenge of the Sith (Best of the Prequels)

    4) The Phantom Menace (Fun and lighthearted except Qui Gon dying)

    5) Return of the Jedi (Great movie though I like the others above more)

    6) Rogue One (Best Disney Star Wars)

    7) Attack of the Clones (Pacing and editing issues)

    8) Solo (Good heist movie, terrible origins story)

    9) The Force Awakens (A New Hope Copy, with less interesting everything, characters, plot, locations, aliens)

    10) The Last Jedi (Ill formed mess)

      Have to chime in!
      1. Empire Strikes Back (Any questions?)
      2. A New Hope
      3. Rogue One (Yay, no J.J. Binks, I mean Abrams!)
      4. Revenge of the Sith (Forgive the acting, and it is actually quite good and dark, lots of great action)
      5. Return of the Jedi (Ewoks instead of Wookies? Come on George!)
      6. The Phantom Menace (Easter eggs, the start of a Saga, and Darth Maul!)
      7. Solo (Good heist movie, but so predicable and when did Fuel become a precious quantity?)
      8. Attack of the Clones (Great battle at the end, but it’s hard getting there)
      9. The Force Awakens (And anybody can use it!)
      10. The Last Jedi (90% of movie: Heroes are bad and nobody should have such power, last 10%: Most Powerful Jedi ever saves the day and becomes Idol/Hero to younglings)
