GHOST IN THE TOWER underway

I wonder when it became mandatory for car dealerships to have giant aquariums of tropical fish in the waiting areas.

I mention that because I wrote the outline for GHOST IN THE TOWER this week while sitting in the waiting room of a car dealership. Traditionally, whenever I need to go in for car repair, I’m working on a GHOST book at the time. Which, granted, is not all that surprising, considering that in the last seven years I’ve written 18 GHOSTS books.

But! I finished the outline for GHOST IN THE TOWER, and I’ve started the book. It will be my side project until SEVENFOLD SWORD: TOWER is all wrapped up, then full speed ahead! Hopefully I’ll have GHOST IN THE TOWER out in December if all goes well.

What will the book be about? I’m glad you asked.

Short answer:

The Magisterium sues Caina!

Longer answer:

Caina needs to find the cause of a series of bizarre suicides.

Finally, the official book description:

Caina has hated the Imperial Magisterium, the Empire’s college of magi, for all her life…and the magi hate and fear her right back.

But the Magisterium has much bigger problems right now, and the First Magus is willing to make a deal. If Caina can find the root cause of a mysterious string of suicides, the Magisterium will leave her in peace.

Except the suicides are actually murders.

And unless Caina is clever, she’ll be the murderer’s next victim…

  • I have a question about the Ghosts series and don’t know where else to ask it (comments seem to be disabled on the page with the map)
So, throughout the series, a lot of different places are mentioned, and the map of the Empire you drew doesn’t show most of them. Would it be possible for you to give a written guide to how these places are positioned in relation to each other?
To start with, the following places appear in the first series: Malarae/ancient Nighmaria province(s?), Saddai province, Marsis (city, possibly attached to a province), Varia province (Szaldic, just north of Marsis), Vytaagi province, 2 Dilesi provinces (Superior & Inferior, I think), Cyrica province, 4 Caerish provinces, a Mardonia province (Lord Titus was Lord Governor of it, see Forge), Sarbian desert, Anshan (includes Nhabatan), Istarinmul, New Kyre, Catekharon, other free cities (Strigosti), & Argamaz desert.
From what I can determine: Malarae/ancient Nighmaria is situated on the Bay of Empire and a river. Marsis is on the western coast of the Empire. Varia province is directly north of Marsis. Dilesia is in a mountainous area, and is somewhat close to Vytaagi province, which is on the Narrow Sea. Saddai is in a southern area of the empire, east of Malarae. Caeria and Mardonia(?) are west of Malarae, at least 1 Caerish province is landlocked. The name of the Mardonia province indicates there’s multiple Mardonia provinces. Cyrica province is south and west(?) of Malarae. A mountain range is the southern border of Cyrica, past which is the Sarbian desert. Anshan is south of the Sarbian desert. The free cities are located on the coast, somewhat bordering Anshan, on the east(?) coast. It also notes that there are many islands in the Alqaarin Sea.
So, that is what I got from the first series, mostly. Is there any way you could piece these together into a better written map?

That sounds like a good description of the Empire’s geography.

I’ll probably do a map of the western Empire when the plot of GHOST NIGHT goes there, but not before, because I have to admit I really don’t like doing maps.
