book marketing DIY
I read a post from a writer lamenting how much marketing he has to do.
I don’t get that, because I have exactly the opposite attitude. I really like doing my own marketing. Most of the time, the various dashboards involved have graphs and charts and spreadsheets so you can see exactly how well everything is doing. And you don’t even have to talk to people most of the time. 🙂 In seven and a half years of self-publishing, I’ve made exactly one phone call related to advertising.
I think I learned that attitude because I got started in the Bad Old Days before self-publishing. Like, GHOST IN THE FLAMES got rejected a billion times, and in a few days it’s going to be it’s own audiobook. In the Bad Old Days, the publishers had control of everything, and the writers had control of nothing. Now we have way more control. Why give that up? Having control of your books is really great and I recommend it. 🙂
If a marketing plan doesn’t work, you can abandon it easily and switch to another. Hard to do that if someone else controls your books!
Speaking of marketing, I’ve written a book and I think you should read it. 🙂

Hey Jonathan – mind saying what your “various dashboards” are? Thanks!
Amazon AMS and Bookbub Ads, primarily. I don’t use Facebook Ads.
Yes, say No to FB ads. Do you work with Overdrive?
Nearly all of my books are on OverDrive via Smashwords. I think I sold about 28 to OverDrive this year.
