Diablo & a dungeon crawl
I played some of the GOG version of the original Diablo. For such an old game, it’s still quite enjoyable. Like old Rogue with some of the rough edges sanded off.
But I do enjoy a good dungeon crawl. Which you can tell if you’ve read FROSTBORN or SEVENFOLD SWORD, since dungeon crawls turn up in them often. (Nadia Moran even did a more modern version of one in CLOAK GAMES: LAST JUDGE.)
Someday, if I can find the time, I want to do a (short) series that is entirely a dungeon crawl.
Meanwhile, the longest dungeon crawl I’ve written to date is FROSTBORN: THE BROKEN MAGE, when Ridmark & party enter the sprawling ruins of Khald Azalar…

In a way, the first part of the Frostborn series is like a giant hexcrawl interspersed with dungeon crawls (and the occasional village), though I guess that describes the Fellowship of the Ring and The Hobbit as well. Anyhow, considering how D&D is gaining in popularity and the current trend in Japanese cartoons, comics and serial fiction (which also seem to be only growing more popular globally) towards video game-style stories, maybe a dungeon crawl wouldn’t be such a crazy idea financially.
The problem is that I have more ideas than I have time to execute them. I’m going to publish 12 books this year, if all goes well, and that’s still only a fraction of the ideas I have.
If you do, you might want to check out the Trails in the Sky games. A) It’s pretty fun. B) The 3rd game is pretty much a 40 hr dungeon crawl. But since the Trails games are story based so there’s some pretty impressive character development overall…
Never heard of Trails In The Sky, but I will check it out!
12 books in a year sounds incredible! I get the impression that most writers struggle for ideas, after a few books. I find it fascinating the original ideas that go into Sci-Fi books. I just don’t seem to think that way.
I probably spent a year of game time on the original Diablo. My favourite game of the ’90s. Very tempted to dig it out again, after noting the GOG sale on it. Currently replaying Torchlight 2. One of the Diablo developers was involved in those games. (Torchlight Frontiers is currently in Alpha, which sparked off that interest). A nice light hearted approach to the genre.
Your D&D style book settings are, for me, a great attraction to your books. Though your future time settings are just as readable.
Keep up the good work…
Thanks! I have more idea than I know what to do with, so I don’t have any trouble coming up with ideas for books.
