Happy New Year! The book looks like a good one. My reading goals for 2020 is to start with Ghost in the Council.
Wow! Attacking 2020 with the speed and power of the Shield Knight!
(Yes, I know … mixing series.)
Finished reading the book. However, there are some issues which mitigate the enjoyment.
1. Regarding weapons in the Imperial Citadel
He wore leather armour and bore no obvious weapons since the Imperial Guards would not have let them into the Emperor’s presence while bearing arms.
CONTRADICTIONS:
Caina took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the Sword of Rasarion Yagar in its scabbard on her belt.Ark followed, grim and silent in chain mail, hand resting on his broadsword’s hilt.
2. Conn (Corbould) shrugged. “There was no point. Conn already has numerous heirs, so Ariadne’s age was not a concern.
3. Should anyone but a valikarion step into this corridor, the spell would induce suicidal insanity, and not even the most powerful warding spell could turn it aside.
INCORRECT: This needs to change since powerful wards can definitely work as Talmania has already proven.
4. Caina leaving Castell alive was very stupid. She had time for a battle and to thrust her sword a DOZEN times into his heart but not time to take off his head when he is lying motionless on the floor ? That is very, very artificial. You can take off a head with pin-drop silence when the opponent is subdued and lying unconscious on the floor.
Both Crailov and Castell are getting several extra lives which is very tiresome to read. Cut off the head and heart and burn the body to ashes should be standard operating procedure for necromantic enemies by now, considering how many of her enemies keep coming back to surprise her. This is becoming a trope of the series now.
