KNIGHT SWORD, EPISODE 1

You are Rosalyn, daughter of Jerome, the chief scribe of the town of Moridun. You have grown up in your father’s scriptorium, helping him prepare contracts, wills, and letters for the people of the town. He also insisted that you learn how to use a sword and a dagger, which you hated.

It was so unladylike.

“We live in dangerous times, my dear. Best you learn how to defend yourself.” He looked out the window as he said it, at a troop of the Queen’s orcish soldiers marching along the street. “Dangerous times.”

You don’t see why. The High Queen protects the people of Andomhaim, everyone knows that. Loyal subjects have nothing to fear.

But despite the sword and dagger practice, you caught the eye of Dietrich, the son of Moridun’s most prosperous blacksmith. A week ago he proposed marriage, and your father accepted, though somewhat reluctantly. In a month’s time, you shall be a married woman.

You are so excited that you can think of little else. In fact, it is still midnight, and you are lying awake in bed, thinking about the upcoming wedding.

So you are awake to hear the sudden pounding at the front door.

You blink in surprise. It’s the middle of the night – who could that be?
