KNIGHT SWORD, EPISODE 5A
“No,” you say.
Caius scowls. “What do you mean, no?”
“We can’t go to the gates” you say. “If we go to the gates we’ll get caught. What if Ulmoch left soldiers there?”
Caius’s scowl deepens, but you see in his eyes that he knows you’re right.
“We will not get caught,” says Caius. “I have devoted the last twenty years to defending that sword. Jerome gave his life to protect the sword. I will not see it fall into the hands of the damned Night Ravens and their Blood Queen.”
“The sword?” you say. “What’s so important about…”
You hear the tramp of boots on the street outside the church, and see the sudden flash of torchlight.
“Damn it,” says Caius. “Hide!”
You both duck behind the altar, the sheathed longsword clutched in your hands.
A moment later a dozen orcish soldiers in the High Queen’s crimson livery enter the church, torches and swords in their hands. They’re led by a huge orc in black chainmail, his missing nose creating a black crater in his gray face.
One of the orcs growls. “This is a waste of time, Vlacht. The old wizard had…”
The noseless orc backhands the complaining orc, who falls the ground with a grunt.
“No, it’s not,” says Vlacht. “You know how the rebels think. They know our Queen’s Ravens cannot enter ground hallowed to their precious High God. So they always hide in the ruined churches, thinking that will save them. We’ll find the rebels, kill them, and present our Queen with sword. The Night Ravens care nothing for money, and the bounty shall be ours. None of this shall happen, however, if you stand here and gripe. So stop talking and find the rebels.”
The orcs begin to fan through the ruined church.
It won’t take them long to find you behind the altar. You could try to go through the window behind the altar, but there’s an excellent chance Vlacht and his orcs will hear your crashing through the underbrush over the overgrown yard. Or, if you hurry, you might try to get back into the secret passage, and wait for the orcs to leave.
Besides you, Caius tenses, and you realize that he’s about to take action.
