The world of “Demonsouled” isn’t exactly cupcakes and unicorns, but I very strongly suspect Mr. Martin and I have different views on how the world works, which undoubtedly colors our writing.

Undoubtedly! I believe you are a Christian of some sort (Catholic?), and, if Martin’s books are any indication of his worldview, Martin is probably some kind of nihilist (or a believer in some such odd modern or post modern philosophy). Than again…I always though Alan Moore was an atheist, turns out he is a “Chaos Magician”…..yeah.

No it’s not (nor was I suggesting it was), but then again neither was “Lord of the Rings”, and yet in comparison, there is a massive difference between Tolkien’s works, and Martin’s.
As someone on another blog said, “I enjoy grim and lyrical, but ‘grim and gritty’ just goes too far” I might be paraphrasing there.

Grim and lyrical is good. Grim and gritty, I think, often just needs a good vacuuming.
