Book Recommendations

Andrew S writes to ask:

“Hi Jonathan, not that I want to do ANYTHING that takes away from your time writing Dragontiarna: Warden, I was just wondering if you had any new book/series recommendations? Following your posts about them I read all of William King’s Kormak series & all the various books of Marc Alan Edelheit’s Last War saga.”
I’ve mostly read mysteries and science fiction in 2021 so far so I don’t have any new recommendations for fantasy. So let’s open it up to the floor!
What fantasy book recommendations do you have?

Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series, Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive as well as Mistborn are excellent reads.

Terry Pratchett’s Diskworld series. Uneven, slow starting, but OMG. Pratchett uses humor and fantasy to tell some awesome stories.

    • Joe Abercrombie’s series starting with 1. Half a King, 2. Half the world, 3. Half a war.

  • Or another one I would recommend, Christopher Paolini; Eragon.
The film was a load of sh**e but the book series is one of the best series I have read.

Witch Hat Atelier. That is, another volume has come out in English translation this year, and a second one is scheduled for it, if you want new.

Tales From the Fermi Resolution: Vol. 1: Shadow of the Tower for those who want high fantasy post-apocalyptical North America. (If you really want to go for it, Moe Lane’s Frozen Dreams is hard-boiled detective high fantasy post-apocalyptical North America

  • If you want a major in depth world building with a long series of massive books I suggest The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and finished by Brandon sanderson.

The Belgiard and the mallorean by David Eddings are brilliant.

Jim butcher is really good with his Dresden files and Codex Alera.

The Demon Accords by John conroe and the Hellequin series by Steve Mchugh are definitely worth a read.

Also, whilst it is not actually fantasy, but sci fi space military opera I would highly recommend the Lost Fleet series and its spin offs by Jack Campbell.
