As you note, AI is artificial, but not all that intelligent. One place I could see the current ChatGPT programs working (with a decent amount of oversight) is romance novels. Many are extremely formulaic and use the same basic outline. I knew one author who would run a find/replace on names, do a light rewrite (took her about a week) and then her next book was done. It’s not plagiarizing if it’s your own stuff, right?

For fantasy and science fiction, creativity is essential. It’s hard for humans to be creative, I don’t see programs managing it any time soon.
