A judge shut down the LimeWire filesharing service.

I don’t have any deep thoughts about the morality of copyright law. But I have seen lots and lots of malware-riddled computers, computers that obtained their malware from infected pirated files on Limewire. It was always the same old story; somebody wants to listen to the latest Shakira song or whatever for free, so they hit up Limewire. And, lo and behold, they infect their computers.

I once new a guy who bought a new laptop, and the first thing he did, the very first thing, was to install Limewire and start downloading pirated files. He didn’t run Windows Update first. He didn’t install antivirus software first. No, he went on Limewire and started downloading music.

Needless to say, he had a virus within three hours.

So Limewire has generated a lot of work for me over the last ten years, and I’m not all grieved to see it go.
