The younger sister of Mazael Cravenlock, Rachel is the most eligible unmarried noblewoman of the Grim Marches. The man who claims her hand will gain an alliance with Lord Mitor of Castle Cravenlock, the second most powerful lord of the Grim Marches.

The second, and not the first. This fact, it is said, gnaws at Lord Mitor…and at Lady Rachel, as well.

Perhaps that is why Rachel remains unwed. At twenty-three, most noblewomen her age have born three or four children, but Rachel’s hand has not yet been pledged to any knight or lord. Lord Richard Mandragon offered the hand of his son, Toraine, yet Lord Mitor refused him. A grievous insult, and one that might lead to war.

Lord Mitor has given no reason. Yet rumor says he has promised Rachel’s hand to another.

One with the power to destroy Mitor’s enemies, to make Mitor supreme over the Grim Marches, but at a terrible price.

And what does Lady Rachel think of this? She answers that she is happy to obey her lord brother’s will in all things, even as her mouth smiles and her green eyes scream in horror.
